Rhode Island Hospital
The state's largest hospital and the third-largest hospital in New England, Rhode Island Hospital is designated as the Level 1 Trauma Center for Southeastern New England. Alongside the attached Hasbro Children's Hospital, it serves as Brown University's principal teaching and research hospital. The Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments see a combined 150,000 visits a year. This site is the focus of tertiary inpatient care for the Brown Orthopedic Residency Program. Surgery here is divided between the main OR, the Hasbro Children's OR, and the RIH ambulatory surgical center. The traditional epicenter of the residency program is also the location of the department's academic offices, the resident orthopedic clinic, the orthopedic department library, and the Graduate Medical Education Office. The hospital is staffed 24/7 with an overnight resident call team with access to call rooms and an on-site YMCA Gym.
The Miriam Hospital
This busy community-academic facility with approximately 250 beds is also located in Providence. This hospital is home to our Total Joint Center, recently awarded the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval, and is the primary site for elective inpatient orthopedic surgery for the Brown Orthopedic Residency Program. Surgery here is divided between the main OR and the Fain ambulatory surgical center. A combination of residents and PAs staffs the daytime orthopedic coverage of the Emergency Department. Overnight coverage is a combination of resident and fellow home call. Trauma and subspecialty fellows have the option to moonlight for call coverage at this location.
Kettle Point - East Bay Surgical Center
The East Bay Surgical Center provides additional outpatient surgical experience for the Brown Orthopedic Residency Program. Procedures span the orthopedic spectrum, including hand surgery, arthroscopy, spine surgery, and total joint arthroplasty. The standalone surgical center operative experience is a valuable complement to the residency program's community and tertiary hospital surgical experiences.
Providence Veterans Affairs Hospital (VA)
The Providence VA Medical Center offers a unique opportunity to care for our nation's veterans. The chief resident coordinates orthopedic care at this site and staffs cases with subspecialty faculty and fellows. The Providence VAMC site is a great location for graduated autonomy as residents indicate patients for surgery and coordinate orthopedic care preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. Four months of the residency are at the VA. The PGY6 trauma fellows staff trauma cases and elective cases based on areas of interest.
Rhode Island Hospital Orthopaedic Research – Coro Building
