Bassel Diebo, MD
Director of Spine Research and Innovation; Assistant Professor of OrthopaedicsFellowship-trained in spine and scoliosis surgery, as well as both spine and orthopaedic research, Dr. Bassel Diebo treats all spine disorders and scoliosis conditions across adolescence and adulthood. He serves as the director of Spine Research and Innovation. He is also an assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and the co-director of the Brown Spine Surgery Fellowship.
Dr. Diebo performs hundreds of spine surgeries each year. His practice ranges from degenerative spinal conditions (stenosis and spondylolisthesis) to spinal curvatures such as scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis. His areas of focus are complex and revision spinal reconstruction, flatback syndrome, adolescent and adult scoliosis, Hip-Spine Syndrome, full-body three-dimensional alignment, and posture.
Dr. Diebo attended medical school at Aleppo University in Syria before fleeing the war-torn country. Once in the United States, Dr. Diebo obtained extensive medical and surgical training through fellowship and residency programs. He completed research fellowships in spine surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery and NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases, both in New York. He then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at The State University of New York in Brooklyn, New York. Most recently, Dr. Diebo completed a fellowship in complex adolescent and adult spine and scoliosis surgery at the Rhode Island Hospital and took part as an inaugural traveling fellow with the International Spine Study Group (ISSG) which is accepted as one of the leading foundations of spine surgery research in the world.
Dr. Diebo is considered a leading authority in spinal alignment and posture and one of the most published spine surgeons of his generation with more than 250 publications at the National Library of Medicine and upward of 1,000 podium presentations, books, and chapters under his name. Among multiple recognitions, Dr. Diebo was named one of ExpertScape’s Top World Experts in Lordosis, Kyphosis, and Scoliosis; the recipient of Brown University’s Lucas-Palumbo Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery; named one of Becker’s Spine Review’s “Ten Spine Surgeons Under 45 to Know” in 2022; and listed among North American Spine Society’s “20 under 40” in 2020.

Alan Daniels, MD
Mark Palumbo Endowed Spine Division Chief; Co-Director of Spine Surgery Fellowship; Professor of OrthopaedicsDr. Alan H. Daniels is a Board-Certified spine surgeon who specializes in adult spinal deformity and other complex spinal disorders. He serves as Chief of Spine for the Orthopedic Department at The Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. He is also a professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and the co-director of the Brown Spine Surgery Fellowship.
Dr. Daniels performs over 500 spine surgeries per year. His practice focuses on patients who suffer from scoliosis, kyphosis, flatback syndrome, failed spinal surgery, and degenerative spinal disease, as well as spinal trauma and spinal tumors. Many of his patients have undergone one or more previous spinal surgeries, although he also frequently performs primary spinal surgery.
Dr. Daniels completed medical school at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, and orthopedic surgery residency training at Brown University. He then completed additional spine surgery fellowship training with Dr. Mark Palumbo and Dr. Phil Lucas, before being recruited back to Rhode Island as their partner. His research focuses on spinal biomechanics, optimization of outcomes following spinal deformity surgery, and prevention of complications after spine surgery.
Additionally, Dr. Daniels is an internationally renowned researcher and has published over 480 peer-reviewed articles, 550 national and international research posters/presentations, and has edited 4 orthopedic education textbooks. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Lumbar Spine Research Society, and the Scoliosis Research Society. His research has won many prestigious awards including the SRS Whitecloud, Russell A Hibbs, and John H Moe Awards.

Eren Kuris, MD
Co-Director of Spine Surgery Fellowship; Associate Residency Program for Orthopedic Residency; Assistant Professor of OrthopaedicsDr. Eren O. Kuris is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spine and scoliosis surgeon who specializes in complex spinal disorders, including spinal deformity, correction of prior failed spine surgery, spinal infections, and spinal tumors. He treats both adult and pediatric spinal conditions, including scoliosis. He serves as the Director of the Spine Surgery Fellowship at Brown University and the Associate Program Director for the Orthopedic Residency. He is also an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he serves as the Director of Acute Spine Care.
Dr. Kuris employs the latest technologies in the treatment of spinal conditions, including spinal robotics and navigation, minimally invasive spine surgery, and motion preservation surgeries such as disc replacement. He takes a patient centered approach and individualizes each treatment plan to the needs of the patient and is a firm believer that surgery should be considered only when all other treatment options have been unsuccessful.
Dr. Kuris received his medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Brown University. After residency, he completed an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Brown University, followed by a spine surgery fellowship at the University of Colorado, where he received specialized training in complex spine and scoliosis surgery.
Dr. Kuris is actively involved in spine research, where he uses clinical data to influence the outcome of his patients. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed abstracts, publications, and book chapters. He is a member of multiple international organizations, such as the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He volunteers on several committees for these organizations, including the education and research grant committees for the Scoliosis Research Society and the early career advisory council for NASS.

Bryce Basques, MD
Assistant Professor of OrthopaedicsDr. Basques is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon who specializes in spinal disorders such as disk herniations, degenerative cervical, thoracic, lumbar disease, spinal deformity, trauma, and tumors. He also specializes in correcting failed surgery and revision procedures. He has extensive experience with the latest advances in spine surgery, including robotic spine surgery, navigation, minimally invasive spine surgery, outpatient spine surgery, and motion preservation (non-fusion surgery). He tailors the treatment plan to each patient's needs, with a focus on non-operative management whenever possible.
Dr. Basques attended medical school at Yale University, where he completed a combined MD and Master of Health Science (MHS) program focused on clinical outcomes research. He completed the prestigious orthopaedic surgery residency at Rush University, where he was an associate team physician for the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox. After residency, he completed the spine surgery fellowship at the renowned Rothman Insitute, where he was an associate team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Phillies, and Philadelphia 76ers.
Dr. Basques has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and he regularly presents spine research at national and international academic meetings. He has received multiple research grants and awards from organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Basques maintains an active clinical research laboratory and mentors medical students, residents, and fellows.
Dr. Basques serves on the NASS Research Funding Committee, for which he evaluates grant applications and directs research funding for the largest multispecialty spine society every year. He is also on the NASS Clinical Practice Guideline Committee, where he evaluates current literature to generate evidence-based recommendations that guide clinical practice worldwide. He is a peer-reviewer for multiple major academic journals.
