Dr. Trafton joined the Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital faculty in 1984. University Orthopedics formed in 1990 where he was as a trauma surgeon until his retirement in 2005.  He treated his patients with kindness and the outstanding care for which he was known.  Dr. Trafton was passionate about orthopaedic surgeon education and served as director of the Brown University Trauma Fellowship.  Through Health Volunteers Overseas, he contributed to post graduate trauma training and was recognized in 2015 by the organization with the tenth annual HVO Golden Apple Award which is bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated a strong commitment to HVO’s mission to improve global health through the education, training, and professional development of the health workforce in resource-scarce countries.  Dr. Trafton joined HVO in 2005. Serving as project director to HVO’s orthopaedics project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Dr. Trafton has contributed to the establishment of a post-graduate trauma-training program, which now has five senior residents officially in training. The program is Ghana’s second residency site for full qualification in trauma and orthopaedics. Dr. Trafton has served month-long assignments in Ghana each year since 2011, offering training and education to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition to his work with students, he collaborates and advises on-site faculty, training the trainers of the department to advance the quality of teaching and learning at the site. Dr. Trafton received a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Yale College and completed his medical degree at the Harvard Medical School, graduating Cum Laude. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California in San Francisco.

Dr. Limbird, a founding member of University Orthopedics, Inc,  served in the Adult Reconstruction Division specializing in knee and hip joint replacements, until his retirement in 2018. He deeply impacted his patients' lives and is often credited with assisting their return to an active lifestyle.  Dr. Limbird's retirement plans including traveling with his wife Gloria, and spending time with his 3 children and many grandchildren.  He enjoys the outdoors and will be sure to include skiing, hiking and kayaking in his plans.

Dr. Ehrlich was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and of Dartmouth College, where he graduated at the age of 19, Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, from which he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. After starting his career in New York City, he moved to Massachusetts in 1972 where he served as the Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School for 18 years. For the next three decades he served as the Vincent Zecchino Professor and Chairman of Orthopedics at Brown University and Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals. He also served as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Brown University Health System.

Over the course of his long and distinguished career, he was the recipient of countless honors and awards including the Milton W. Hamolsky, M.D. Outstanding Physician of the Year and the President’s Pursuit of Excellence Lifetime Champion Award in 2015. He recently became an Inaugural Fellow of the Orthopedic Research Society.

He was known for his tireless work ethic, signature bow ties, wry sense of humor and love of sailing. His legacy will live on through the countless students he mentored, the numerous medical teaching and research facilities that bear his name and the Michael G. Ehrlich, M.D. Endowed Chair in Orthopedic Research. He will also be remembered by the literally thousands of patients whose lives he touched as their physician.

On Sunday, September 15, 2019, Dr. Mark A. Palumbo, loving husband and father of three, passed away at the age of 57. He was surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Anne (Pagliuca) Palumbo and his three cherished children, Kristen M. Palumbo, Nicole A. Palumbo and Mark A. Palumbo; his parents Ralph and Marie (Mallette) Palumbo, brother Ralph A. Palumbo and sister Cheryl (Palumbo) Rey. Mark also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Mark graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School (‘80’), Boston University, Magna Cum Laude (‘84’), Boston University Medical School (’88). Soon after, Mark became a resident at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University Medical Program. His specialty was Spine Surgery where he attended the Case Western Reserve University Spine Fellowship Program.

Mark was a practicing Spine Surgeon for over 25 years, and the Chief of Spine Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the recipient of many Academic Honor Awards during his medical career.  His most cherished was the Award for Excellence in Teaching-Brown University Orthopedic Residency Program.  Mark was recently honored for several AAOS Achievement Awards 2018-19.   He published and co-published over 70 publications for medical journals.  Dr. Palumbo was a true mentor, healer, teacher and loyal friend to so many.

A passion for the outdoors, Mark enjoyed hiking, skiing, bicycling and walking his dog Elle. Most of his free time was spent doing all these activities with his family and friends. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, frequently visiting museums and art galleries. Mark was a Boston sports fan.
