Brown's Sports Medicine Fellowship is a unique, one year experience of post-residency training in disorders specifically related to all facets of sports medicine. The fellowship is ACGME accredited (4/20/2018 - 4/1/2028) and participates in the match, sponsored by the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), administered through the San Francisco match (SFmatch.org). The fellowship is modeled to be a true mentorship experience with the fellow playing an active role in the management of injured athletes as a critical member of the sports medicine team. The fellowship is not designed to mimic another year of your residency, it is designed to provide an attending level experience. The goal for the fellowship is to provide a state-of-the-art clinical and operative opportunity that allows the fellow to become an expert in the diagnosis, non-operative treatment, operative treatment and rehabilitation of sports related injuries. The sports medicine fellow will work with fellowship trained and board certified sports medicine orthopedic surgeons with a primary focus on knee, shoulder, and hip disorders. The surgical experience includes routine arthroscopic knee and shoulder procedures and complex disorders such as multi-ligament knee injuries and shoulder arthroplasty. There is additional exposure to pediatric sports medicine and hip arthroscopy, and opportunities to participate in trauma, elbow, and foot/ankle disorders with associated faculty if desired. The fellow is encouraged to work with the shoulder fellow. There is ample opportunity for an independent surgical experience for the fellow with full attending privileges for the academic year.

Program Details
The Division of Sports Medicine maintains a busy clinical practice. The Fellow has the opportunity to evaluate patients in different clinical settings such as: attending private offices, the Rhode Island Hospital sports medicine clinic, the VA medical center, and athletic training rooms at Brown University and Providence Bruins Hockey. This offers the opportunity for a complete and varied experience in the management of athletic injuries. Exposure to different attendings throughout the year allows the fellow to see multiple approaches in patient management. It is important that the fellow learns in an office setting the management of patients, the business aspects of medicine, and understanding coding/billing. Physical therapy is located in all office locations providing the fellow with constant interaction with physical therapists and the opportunity to monitor their patient’s progress.
Operative experience is designed for the fellow to master skills in diagnostic and operative arthroscopy as well as open surgical procedures. The division draws surgical patients from the private clinical setting, athletic training rooms, hospital sports medicine clinics, and appropriate surgical cases from our level 1 trauma center. In general, the fellow will be in the operating room 3 to 4 days a week. This mentorship program allows for progressive maturation of the fellow leading to an independent surgical experience with the opportunity to teach.
Numerous opportunities exist for the sports medicine fellow to participate with athletic teams including Brown University division 1 athletics and the Providence Bruins Professional Hockey Team (AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins). The fellow will participate in preparticipation physical exams, athlete clinics, game coverage, and medical/surgical management of the athletes as required. Because the Sports Medicine Fellowship is in the Department of Orthopedics, clinical responsibilities can be shared with other residents and fellows. This allows for time flexibility for the fellow.
Sports Medicine at Brown
University Orthopedics are the official orthopedic providers of Brown University Athletics.
Research
The fellow will have protected time for his/her research efforts; this time can be adjusted for the fellow's needs. This time also includes the opportunity to research or learn surgical procedures in the department cadaver and arthroscopic laboratories. The fellow is encouraged to complete or to contribute to at least one research project in the department.
The division maintains an active sports medicine research program under the direction of Brett Owens, MD and boasts world class research faculty to include Braden Fleming, PhD; Trey Crisco, PhD; Qian Chen, PhD; and Martha Murray, MD; with several Brown University undergraduates, medical students, and residents undertaking projects concurrently. Brown maintains a national leadership role in ligament and articular cartilage research. Ample support for supplies and equipment as well as technical support is available to assist the fellow.
Salary and Benefits
The salary is determined by level of training (PGY year) and in accordance with Rhode Island Hospital Department of Graduate Medical Education. During the year the fellow has elective opportunities to augment their surgical experience and salary through the VA medical center by teaching and assisting orthopedic residents during elective surgery. Additional compensation is available including, but not limited to health and dental insurance. The fellow has opportunity to attend annual society meetings including AAOS, AOSSM, and AANA. There is also opportunity to function as a surgical faculty member at the AANA Resident Course in Chicago. The Fellowship year begins August 1 and ends July 31 of the following year. Two weeks of formal vacation are provided in addition to academic meeting trips and flexibility is available if job interview requirements arise.
Application Process
Our next application enrollment period will be for the academic year August 2026 through July 2027. Applications will be accepted from September, 2024 and the deadline for submission is November 1st, 2024. Applications will only be accepted through the SF Match.
